With their raw, organic sound, Tennessee’s Kings of Leon emerged in 2003 as Southern rock for that indie-garage set, sort of the Strokes for that South. Even though there were hints of a new direction on their third album, Due to the fact On the TIMES, its follow-up, ONLY By the NIGHT, follows as a result of using a near-reinvention with the Kings’ sound. ONLY By the NIGHT might be mistaken for avant-indie cult heroes the Liars on a Southern holiday, as post-punk angularity, distorto-funk bass lines, and clattering percussion are processed via what sounds like the world’s biggest fuzzbox. Though you can find old-glory moments of garagey abandon, most of these tracks sound like somebody sat and carefully regarded as the top way to frame them. And that’s what makes the difference between getting a very good band and generating a fine album.
